BS 8524 CPD Seminar Presented to Hong Kong Branch Members

Coopers Fire delivered a paper at the recent Comprehensive Certification Course at the Fire Service Systems In Buildings 2014 symposium. This course is organised jointly by the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers – Building Services Division (HKIE-BSD), Fire Division (HKIE-FE) with the Institution of Fire Engineers – Hong Kong Branch (IFE-HK), the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers – Hong Kong Branch (CIBSE-HKB), the Building Services Operation and Maintenance Executive (BSOMES), and the Association of Registered Fire Service Installation Contractions of Hong Kong Ltd (FSICA).
Coopers Fire, with partner Jardine Engineering Corporation Ltd, presented the paper during an evening session attended by some 300 fire safety professionals. The board audience was made up of delegates from Government, universities, consultants, manufacturers and contractors as well as property and facilities management.
Our standards and compliance director, Chuck Lewis, gave a general overview about smoke barriers and their use within the built environment. The regulatory guidance and standards to achieve compliance from an EU regulatory perspective, which is accommodated in the Hong Kong Fire Safety Code. A general overview of fire barriers was also discussed on the same theme. The presentation was concluded with an informative in depth discussion about the latest product standard for Active Fire Curtain Barrier Assemblies, BS 8524 series.
The reason for the high attendance is that these member bodies take fire protection issues very seriously in Hong Kong. Many speakers attended the symposium from multiple industries over the course of 6 weeks.Coopers Fire remained the only international speaker.



Fire curtains are a modern alternative to traditional (non-loadbearing) compartmentation such as walls, doors, shutters and glazing in creating open spaces in the built environment for which we live, work or transit through. BS 8524 is the first and only National standard for these modern fire products to be specified to.
BS 8524 for active fire curtain barriers is not just about simply testing the product for fire-resistance on a furnace, the standard covers every aspect of the constituent parts that make up the finished assembly; the fabric curtain materials, the motor drive systems, its frame, and its electrical power and control systems with all associated ancillary devices. So instead of just fire-resistance testing a finished fire curtain, BS 8524 requires you to perform a sequence and series of operational tests prior to testing on the furnace, this also includes the manufacturers range of motor drive systems, base and coated fabric curtain materials for chemical and reaction to fire tests and the electrical power and control panels, ensuring they all work independently of each other - it’s how the aerospace industry test components.

BS 8524 goes further than just the product specification as it also includes a code of practice for the design intent, common applications, the installation, commissioning and servicing of the product. There are strict requirements to be followed in terms of installation; a poor installation could render a great product useless.
BS 8524 therefore recommends independent third party approvals, as do the functional building regulations as well as trade associations. This is where UKAS approved laboratories or certification bodies independently assess and validate materials and services by a process of sampling and selection, witness testing, and perform continuous periodic factory and field auditing against the standard. This provides stakeholders with a high level of confidence in both the product and its installation as a life safety device.
