Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ) Mall in Singapore is a £2 billion centrally located mixed use building spreading over four-hectares featuring shopping malls, entertainment facilities, office space and modern residential living spaces. Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ) Mall was constructed by Lendlease and opened in October 2019.
The mixed-use commercial development is Lendlease’s largest to date in Singapore and one of their largest projects in Asia.
PLQ was designed by DP Architects, who are based in Marina Square, Singapore and found inspiration to design the development by the intricate weaving patterns of the Songket, a traditional Malay brocade textile.
The retail mall offers six floors of retail, a floor with cinema and other entertainment offers, and a rooftop garden. It was important to DP Architects that pedestrian flow was as seamless as possible in the development, hence the use of fire curtains.
To retain a free flow of pedestrians in the retail mall, DP Architects designed four-sided FireMaster Closed Concertina fire curtains on each of the floors around the escalator wells to offer the level of fire protection required.
The FireMaster Concertina was favoured by the architects due to the ‘no guide rails’ feature, meaning the escalator well areas and the surrounding concourses remained open plan and free from obtrusive side guides required on traditional vertical fire curtains.
There is a total of eight FireMaster Closed Concertina fire curtains installed with two curtains on four floors around the escalators on levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. All of the Concertina fire curtains were rectangular in shape ranging from 3.5 metre to 4 metre drops. The largest curtain was 31 metres long by 6.2 metres wide.
By utilising the FireMaster Concertina meant it would provide the building with an approved, non-invasive means of fire protection that would satisfy the fire regulations as well as ensuring that the open plan design remained as intended allowing for the free flow of pedestrians.
Innivate worked closely with Shinryo Corporation on this project to satisfy the fire regulations as well as maintaining the building design requirements. As the fire curtain installers it meant that the fire curtain was fully project managed ensuring the final, fitted product satisfied the high quality finish required.
