WHAT WAS THE CLIENT LOOKING FOR?

In April 2018, the Hotel Russell underwent an extensive refurbishment to become The Principal London, a five star hotel, located on Russell Square, Bloomsbury, London.

EPR Architects were the lead designer and Coopers Fire worked with LJJ Contractors on this project.

The Grade II listed, ‘grande dame’ Hotel Russell was built in 1898 by architect Charles Firzroy Doll, who was later commisioned to design the dining room on the titanic and used the Hotel Russell as a model.

The 334 room hotel is distinctively clad in decorative thé-au-lait (“tea with milk”) terracotta with four British Queens guarding the entrance. It is known for its decorative features such as its extravagant furniture, an ornate Pyrenean marble staircase and an interior sunken garden. It was always intended to be a home to glamour and indulgence and at the time it opened, each room was fitted with an en-suite bathroom which was a great innovation for the time.

HOW DID WE HELP?

The existing ornate and decorative features of the hotel, meant that the fire curtains needed to integrate with the existing parts of the building that were remaining. This included a four sided, marble clad atrium in one of the main entrance halls, which covers two floors from ground floor to first floor.

There were four fire curtains installed around the first floor of the atrium therefore reinstating fire separation between floors.

Fire curtains offering up to 3 hours fire resistence were also installed in the new hotel kitchens, preventing fire from spreading from kitchen areas to the public dining rooms and bar.
