Denbigh Terrace is a newly renovated four storey domestic property in London located just off Portobello Road. With this challenge, Coopers engineered a 45 degree, angled fire curtain that runs up the timber stairway stringer. The angled fire curtain is subtly hidden when not in use but still offers the right level of fire protection and operates perfectly as a fully functional active fire curtain.
Denbigh Terrace is a newly renovated four storey domestic property in London located just off Portobello Road.
The renovation of the property was designed and project managed by George Clarke Architects. George Clarke is the celebrity architect that features on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and Restoration Man.
Denbigh Terrace was originally a three floor property, that used the roofspace to create a fourth floor and was also extended to have a large basement extension to create a four floor ‘iceberg’ property. The open plan design of the property meant a fire break was needed between the ground floor and first floor at the request of Chelsea and Kensington Building Control.
The fire break stops the spread of fire through the property and also protects a means of escape. Fire curtains are being specified in more domestic properties to offer compartmentation and protected means of escape.
As space for a standard fire curtain was limited, we were approached by George Clarke Architects to offer a bespoke engineered solution.
With this challenge, Coopers engineered a 45 degree, angled fire curtain that runs up the timber stairway stringer.
Coopers worked with the architects and main contractor and were able to offer solutions to hide the side guides and headbox and neatly incorporated them into the stairway construction.
The angled fire curtain is subtly hidden when not in use but still offers the right level of fire protection and operates perfectly as a fully functional active fire curtain.
The Coopers Fire engineering team were able to work closely with the architects on this project to comply with the fire regulations and were able to ensure the final bespoke engineered solution was installed correctly and satisfied the high quality finish required.
