Projects such as the $22 billion Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant development that is looking at a 2022 completion date, A $4.5 billion expansion of the North Marmara Highway and Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, the $10 billion Istanbul Kanal, a $22 billion investment in a third airport of Istanbul and a new $2.6 billion Financial Centre covering a whopping 47 million square feet of the country's capital are just a handful of the infrastructural developments that are currently being undertaken.

Today we are seeing more of a call for open space building design as such spaces can easily cater for a lot of people, and a lot of people is exactly what Qatar will be seeing in 2022 for the FIFA World Cup. In buildings like these, Fire curtains can be the only solution. Fire Curtains help designers to replace non-loadbearing fire walls and doors, fire doors, fire rated glazing, and sprinklers to achieve modern, open plan environments that are wholly in line with stringent fire regulations.

FIVE GUYS, DUBAI MARINA MALL

Sector:

RETAIL, RESTAURANTS & LEISURE

Product:

Two-sided, Open FireMaster® Concertina Fire Curtain

Compartmentation and Protected Means of Escape

What:

Five Guys is a global fast food chain of restaurants with a new outlet located in the popular Dubai Marina Mall in Dubai. Coopers manufactured a two sided, FireMaster open Concertina fire curtain for our distributing partner in Dubai UAE, Dosteen Doors and Shutters.

Dosteen worked closely with contractor, Al Tayer Stocks LLC, to ensure fire regulations were adhered to, offering the right level of fire protection to the staff and customers.

The Concertina fire curtain is installed around the main counter in the premises. The counter divides up the main restaurant from the serving area and kitchen. In the event of a fire, the fire curtain will deploy around the counter, acting as a fire break between the kitchen and restaurant.

As no corner posts are required for the Concertina product, it means the right angled counter remains clear of any guides and the fire curtains remains invisible from view until needed.

How:

Coopers FireMaster Concertina is a great way to offer compartmentation between areas like a kitchen and restaurant and able to divide up these two critical areas in a public building and act as a fire break.

By installing the FireMaster Concertina meant it would provide the building with an approved, non-invasive means of fire protection that would satisfy the fire regulations as well as ensuring that the open plan design remained as intended.

Compartmentation and Protected Means of Escape were required as part of the fire safety solutions.

A 7770mm long by 5230mm wide, two-sided, open FireMaster Concertina was installed around the serving counter and due to its modern technology, well-engineered design and non invasive properties means it fits perfectly with this open plan, fire engineered restaurant.

The compact headbox was used on the Five Guys fire curtain meaning the curtain is less noticeable when installed and allows less headroom above the ceiling line.

Benefits:

Dosteen were able to work closely with the contractors on this project to satisfy the fire regulations. As a manufacturer and installer, through Dosteen, means that the fire curtain was fully project managed so were able to ensure the final, fitted product satisfied the high quality
finish required. Coopers are Independently Third Party Certified for Product Testing and Installation.

Coopers fire curtains are recognised as the modern alternative to firewalls, fire doors and glazing, giving designers the freedom to design modern, open plan spaces without compromising fire safety. They are increasingly specified by designers as a solution for open plan designs.

Coopers Fire is a turnkey business, offering the customer a product and service with full provenance. Coopers Fire designs, manufactures, tests, installs and maintains all its fire curtains from our business premises in Havant, Hampshire.

TOPSHOP, OXFORD, UK

Product:

Two-Sided, Open FireMaster® Concertina Fire Curtain

Compartmentation, Protected Means of Escape

What:

Stoneforce Ltd are a sub-contractor fit out company that work regularly with major high street brands such as Topshop, Miss Selfridge and BHS.

Stoneforce appointed Coopers Fire to offer a fire curtain solution for the new Topshop and Topman store in Oxford, offering a fire break around the escalator between the basement and ground floor.

The basement level mainly comprises of the Topshop retail store as well as the offices, store room and services. The ground floor is used by Topman.

The ground floor and basement are connected by a two way escalator for the shoppers and staff to use. As a fire break is required between these floors, it was necessary to install a fire curtain.

To retain an open plan feeling to the basement and allow more usable space at the bottom of the escalator for clothes rails and displays, the FireMaster Concertina was an ideal solution as no corner posts are required.

The FireMaster Concertina once deployed creates a ‘virtual wall’ and is invisible from view until required in the event of a fire.

How:

Coopers FireMaster Concertina is a great way to offer compartmentation between floors and able to fully encapsulate an escalator and act as a fire break.

A 5760mm by 3750mm with a drop of 3935mm, L shaped, open FireMaster Concertina was installed at the bottom of the escalator. The complete system is assessed in accordance with BS EN 1634-1:2008 for 240 minutes Integrity.

Due to its modern technology, well-engineered design and non invasive properties meant it fitted perfectly with this high specification, open plan retail store.

Benefits:

DOMESTIC PROPERTY, DENBIGH TERRACE, LONDON

Sector:

DOMESTIC PROPERTY

Product:

FireMaster® Staircase Angled Fire Curtain

Stairs, Protected Means of Escape

What:

Denbigh Terrace is a newly renovated four storey domestic property in London located just off Portobello Road.

The renovation of the property was designed and project managed by George Clarke Architects. George Clarke is the celebrity architect that features on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and Restoration Man.

Denbigh Terrace was originally a three floor property, that used the roofspace to create a fourth floor and was also extended to have a large basement extension to create a four floor ‘iceberg’ property. The open plan design of the property meant a fire break was needed between the ground floor and first floor at the request of Chelsea and Kensington Building Control.

The fire break stops the spread of fire through the property and also protects a means of escape. Fire curtains are being specified in more domestic properties to offer compartmentation and protected means of escape.

How:

As space for a standard fire curtain was limited, we were approached by George Clarke Architects to offer a bespoke engineered solution.

With this challenge, Coopers engineered a 45 degree, angled fire curtain that runs up the timber stairway stringer.

Coopers worked with the architects and main contractor and were able to offer solutions to hide the side guides and headbox and neatly incorporated them into the stairway construction.

The angled fire curtain is subtly hidden when not in use but still offers the right level of fire protection and operates perfectly as a fully functional active fire curtain.

Benefits:

The Coopers Fire engineering team were able to work closely with the architects on this project to comply with the fire regulations and were able to ensure the final bespoke engineered solution was installed correctly and satisfied the high quality finish required.

Chubb Fire are Coopers’ distributor in the State of Qatar and recently installed multiple vertical fire curtains in the Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City Health Centre in Doha, Qatar. This healthcare facility is the largest ever in the Middle East with over 250,000 square metres of space.

This state of the art, open plan health centre was funded for construction by the Government owned Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), which is one of a number of new facilities planned by HMC and the Supreme Council of Health in the coming years to expand medical and health provisions in the country due to its booming population.

The fit out company on this project were Korean-based Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company, who are well known for the high standards of finish on their projects. Chubb Fire worked with the local consultants, KEO, to ensure all fire requirements were adhered to.

Due to the open plan design of the hospital, with large atriums and long, curved corridors, meant there was a requirement to have multiple fire breaks throughout the building that required a solution that didn’t interrupt the flow and layout of the design. Multiple FireMaster fire curtains were used to offer these fire breaks and were also selected as the product would integrate with the high end finish specified.

How:

Our range of products meant all of the fire curtain requirements were met and the fire regulations could be adhered to keep the occupants of this complex safe. Coopers FireMaster vertical fire curtain is a great way to offer compartmentation between fire zones.

Applications for Compartmentation, Atrium, Lobbies and Receptions and Protected Means of Escape were required as part of the fire safety solutions.

42 FireMaster fire curtains were installed in the Hamad Medical City ranging from 1.5 metres wide to 12 metres wide offering over 2 hours fire resistence and due to the modern technology, well-engineered designs and non invasive properties of the products installed, meant it fitted perfectly with this high specification, open plan health care centre.

FireMaster® Concertina, FireMaster® Vertical and Vii®Fire Fire Curtains

Compartmentation and Atrium, Lobbies & Reception

What:

Chubb Fire are Coopers Fire’s distributor in the State of Qatar and recently installed fire curtains in the Leabaib Health Centre in Doha, Qatar. Chubb Fire worked with the local consultants, Dar Al-Handasah and were employed by the main contractors, Boom Construction Company.

This state of the art, open plan health centre required a range of products. There were two Vii Fire i-Zone fire curtains fitted over pharmacy counter windows and a 10m wide vertical FireMaster fire curtain acting as a fire break between the main reception counters and the entrance atrium. Finally, installed around the atrium was a 23m x 5m rectangular, closed FireMaster Concertina fire curtain.

The Concertina is the first of its kind installed in the State of Qatar and one of the largest installed in the Middle East.

The Concertina is installed on the first floor around the reception atrium and provides a fire break between the ground floor and first floor. The Concertina was used instead of fire rated glazing on the first floor around the atrium, thus creating a more open plan design with a greater feeling of light and space.

How:

Our range of products meant all of the fire curtain requirements were met and the fire regulations could be adhered to keep the occupants of the building safe.

Coopers FireMaster Concertina is a great way to offer compartmentation between floors and was installed because there were no columns at the atrium to install side guides and there is no smoke extraction system on the atrium so functional gaps were not allowed.

By installing the FireMaster Concertina meant it would provide the building with an approved, non-invasive means of fire protection that would satisfy the fire regulations as well as ensuring that the open plan design remained as intended.

Applications for Compartmentation and Atrium, Lobbies and Receptions were required as part of the fire safety solutions.
